Lets’ Look at a scenario: Ideally, you are looking  to buy a Porsche Boxster or Cayman for under $20,000 as your first Porsche weekend toy.

With 102,000 miles, eight owners, and some accident damage on CarFax.com, a 2000 Boxster with only 90 minutes of travel time is available for $7,000.

I’m guessing You’ll need an IMS replacement, as well as a new clutch, based on the photos of the tyres.

Before purchasing, You’d get a PPI to see if there are any additional issues.

The intermediate shaft bearing, commonly known as an IMS bearing, in Porsche 911 and Boxster models from model years 1997 to 2005 has a significant failure rate. Its design and manufacture cause the bearing to break prematurely, resulting in catastrophic engine failure.

Why are used Porsche Boxsters so cheap?

Compared to a brand new car, most vehicles with 50k miles on the odometer are either at or below the mid-price point.
It’s a steal at half the cost…

Let’s start with that, shall we? Boxster, for example, has a starting price of $85k these days. 

On your way out with alternatives, you’ve already spent close to $100,000.

As a result, let’s estimate your budget to be in the area of $45-55k. You’ll have a hard time locating a 40k-mile 911 with only 50k miles on it.

While I won’t go into how reliable these cars are or what flaws they have, let’s have a look at what genuinely sets them apart at half the price.

The average mileage of a Porsche is in the low twenties. So if you buy a Porsche with 50,000 miles, it will be at least four years old. In most cases, the child is older than six years of age. 

Note: Most traditional banks will not finance a vehicle older than seven years and more than seventy thousand kilometres.

Because of this, you’ll see a lot of 2008 Porsche Boxsters selling for $40 to $50k. It’s a question of who has the money to pay them back. 

The answer is yes, you can use your equity line of credit or perhaps a higher-risk loan, but does the individual considering this option truly want to do so? 

Right now, potential purchasers are leaving like flies. This means that the price is in line with what the buyer can afford to pay. 

This is true of all high-end automobiles, not just Porsches. Consider the cost of an S-class vehicle.

Buyer demand is also a factor in why prices don’t go below the midpoint. 

If the identical car was available for $30k, everyone would buy it, driving up the price/demand to $45-50k and bringing it back to equilibrium.

There are two factors that contribute to the value of early 996 and 997 Porsche 911s and early Boxsters

The early engine issues (RMS and IMS problems) and the Porsche community’s reluctance to accept water cooling and the similarity of the 911 and Boxster front ends. 

From the front bumper to the windshield, the 911 and the Boxster are essentially the same car. 

This and the “blobby” headlights seen on the 996 and Boxsters were a big no-no for purists. 

There are flaws in every Porsche, even the air-cooled ones. When these vehicles were first introduced, major auto magazines gave them glowing reviews; you can find some of those in the archives.

 If they’ve been properly cared for and not abused, the 1998-2004 Porsche 911s are a steal. No Porsche repair is cheap. 

The 997 and 991 versions of the Porsche 911 are excellent cars, but they are prohibitively expensive to purchase. 

Because of their superior comfort and liveability, water-cooled Porsches are far superior to air-cooled Porsches in almost every way. 

Just ask an air-cooled Porsche owner how well their A/C and heat work. 

The air-cooled Porsches and 356s of their era are beautiful, but they are a product of their time.

Is Porsche a Luxury Car?

As far as quantity and price are concerned, location is perhaps the most important factor. 

The dot-com bust has left a swath of Silicon Valley covered in low-priced Porsches, for example.

The Age of the Porsche Boxster

There are fewer things to go wrong, and when something does, it’s easier to track out the source of the problem. 

Carburetors, like the one in my car, allow me to restart a stalled vehicle by either adding gas or starting fluid to the carburettor. 

Fuel was not delivered to the engine, thus it started. I need to make sure that I have gas and that it is getting to the pump, and that the pump is working and the filter isn’t blocked up. 

The float in the carburettor could get trapped, which is a lot less often (but I’ve seen it happen once). 

There are two bolts that hold the fuel pump to the engine’s side. If the pump is bad, I can check the fuel level by loosening the hoses, and if there is, I have a spare pump in the toolbox. 

A few minutes later, I’ll be able to fix it.

As a result of this, my car is equipped with a fuel injection system. 

You can spray some starting fluid in the intake if it won’t start, and if that doesn’t work, the problem “MAY” be the pump, which is located under the car and costs approximately $70 to replace (the fuel tank pump is located in most fuel-injected cars). 

Alternatively, the problem could be a blown fuse. Alternatively, the fuel pump relay, hidden behind a panel under the dashboard, could be faulty. 

A simple check to verify if the pump was operating and replacing it was all I needed to do, although the crank position sensor also controls the ignition, so it’s likely I didn’t have either fuel or ignition.

Despite the fact that my automobile is gasoline injected, basic maintenance and repairs are still quite straightforward. 

When I lift the hood, I can see the engine, which is facing forwards rather than sideways as it is in most modern automobiles. 

If a belt breaks, I can still go home since it has two “V” belts instead of a single serpentine belt that drives the water pump and alternator. If necessary, I could easily perform a belt replacement in the middle of the night in a parking lot with only the most basic tools.

It was my Uncle’s idea to replace the belt on the Honda these folks own. We watched a youtube video after I had a look at it. 

Removed one wheel and then panels had to be removed, then it was a very little fit. 

He ultimately made the decision to take it to a store for repair work to be done. 

Even though both my Uncle and my bro had some mechanical experience, neither of them wanted to take on the task of changing the belt on this piece of farm machinery.

Parts aren’t too expensive, but labour is the real issue here. Around $20-25 will get you an idler pulley for a serpentine belt.

 In a parking lot at night, I’ve done it in around 15 or 20 minutes on a rear-wheel-drive car with the part clearly visible. 

Assuming you have a well-equipped repair shop, it could take up to three hours to remove the engine from a front-wheel-drive vehicle. 

To replace a simple and inexpensive item, it could cost up to $250.

In 20 year old cars, higher mileage is not necessarily a bad thing. 

In fact, a Boxster that has been effectively used, could be in a more superior condition than one that has an attractively low mileage reading. 

Low mileage cars can have hidden issues, so you’ll want to take a good look through any documented history available. 

A recognizable pattern of servicing on higher mileage cars is essential. 

On the lower mileage cars, timed intervals between services is the key indicator.

Low mileage cars can miss their planned service intervals and despite a lack of miles, significant wear and tear can take place. 

Look to see when the last time the plugs were changed – 10 years is the limit before plugs must be replaced. 

The brake fluid should be flushed every 2 or 3 years. Check the DOT on the tires – lots of tread doesn’t mean they’re healthy!

Is Cheap Used Boxter a Good Buy?

I’ve been using that notion for years, and recently purchased a secondhand Porsche Boxster that backed it up.

It has been a month! Only a 20% discount on new invoice despite having all the features I desired. 

It came with an extended warranty, new tyres and wheels, and maintenance services like key replacement because it was a certified preowned vehicle.

It’s a must to drive a Porsche. I’ve had a few high-performance vehicles, but none as well-engineered as a Porsche. Subliminally, these cars are amazing. 

The steering is telepathic, the power is incredible, and the dependability is breathtaking. You put it on when you get into a Porsche.

According to previous writings & My experience, used Porsches are no different from other vehicles. 

There is a lot of wear and tear on them. Learn from my mistakes, and you’ll appear like an idiot like me every time you get behind the wheel, because this is my everyday vehicle!

A well-maintained, well-sorted old car is preferable to a brand new one if you want to save money , save the depreciation and don’t mind forgoing the newest in automotive engineering. 

Porsche is a great place to push this idea because many of their cars, like the 944 turbo, remain relevant in terms of engineering for decades. In the end, it’s probably best to go with the age-old rule of buying the most recent model you can afford. 

For example, the M96-engined Porsche 911s and the Boxsters are to be avoided. That is because, these Turbocharged engines, for example, come with a heftier maintenance bill. 

In comparison to buying new, I saved over $40k on my 997.1 and 987.2, and it hasn’t affected my enjoyment in the least. 

When purchasing new, keep in mind that the next update is only a few years away, thus you pay a high price for the most current technology and that period on the pinnacle is ephemeral.

First Gen Porsche Boxster!-What about it?

The first-generation Porsche Boxster, which used a “Boxser” engine and a “Roadster” transmission, is about to turn 20 years old. 

The Boxster platform, on the other hand, continues to be used for the current 718 production model. 

This has led to comprehensive information on the most typical mechanical issues that these vehicles face. The good news is that the Boxster is dependable and has aged well.

Until the Cayenne was introduced, Porsche’s sales volume were led by the mid-engine two-seat roadster.

The Boxster 986 (1997-2004), 987 (2005-2012), 981 (2012-2016) and current 718 models can be found in the used car market. 

Boxsters can be expensive, but the 986 and 987 variants, which are the most popular, can be had for a relatively reasonable price. 

Even while each Boxster has its own unique collection of issues, the more recent models have a lower risk of major breakdowns. 

Not that the early versions should be ignored, but rather that more caution should be exercised.

 4.2017 Boxster was hit with five different recalls;

5. IMS-bearing troubles are still a problem for Boxsters through the 2008 model year,

6.It was a major recall for 1999-2003 Boxsters to fix the transmission so that the vehicle wouldn’t roll away if the parking brake wasn’t engaged.

7. There is a similar problem with the 2002 Boxster, as well. For the past few years, electrical problems have been on the rise.

8.Aside from the fact that the 1999 model year was plagued by casting issues, it’s best to begin your search for a newer Boxster with a model year of 2000 or later. Pass on cars made between 1997 and 1999.

Porsche Boxster models to avoid

Cracks in the cylinder liners of the 986 and 987 Boxster’s M96 and M97 flat six engines are common. 

A one-piece sleeve or liner is used to line the cylinder bores in the case half. In some cases, cracks may appear in the liner because it is made of a different material than the surrounding case.

Coolant loss and engine overheating are the most common consequences of a crack. 

When a crack in the cylinder liner takes a long time to fully open, it can result in serious problems. When the engine is cold, check the coolant level first. 

Take your time; you only have 30 minutes to drive the car.

What Do We Need to Get?

For a limited time, Boxster 987 may be had for a reasonable price
At one point, the Boxster was the most popular Porsche model. 

As time has passed, however, sales of the 718 (which includes the Cayman) have dropped to only 4200 in the United States for the entire year of 2021! For additional information, please see our page on Diverse Viewpoints.

For practical top-down driving, the Boxster is an excellent option. Currently, the late 987 model is the best value for money, while the early 718s have been steadily depreciating in value. 

With used Boxster prices, it’s always a question of which 911 you can get for the same money as a Boxster.

For vehicles with lesser mileage, late-used 987 variants are still available for late teens, while 718 versions are barely above them in the price range. 

When the late 987 arrived in showrooms, most of the Boxster’s design flaws were ironed out, making this a great value. There is now too much demand for the 718 variant, and we’d rather buy an older 911 than a comparable later 718 Boxster.

The best deal is on a model from about the year 986 or 987. For about $8K, you can get a lower mileage 986! It’s a great deal! 

A 986 that has had work done to the areas of concern, such as the IMS bearing, and has been carefully taken care of may be acquired for a very reasonable price now.

The automatic 986 Boxster is a bad idea! Get the three-pedal model. My 80-year-old mother drives an automatic, which is not helpful for your sports car’s reputation. 

There was a complaint that the 986 auto was an excellent car that could be forced to shift gears fast using the manual controls, and that was addressed. No, that’s not the case. 

You’ll see what I mean if you ride with me in a 986 with a manual transmission! Sorry, but the auto version is a little boring. So if you want boring, go ahead. But not for me!

Is it Porsche Boxster years of 1997-2008 should be avoided? 

Generally speaking, no. If you’re in the market for a Porsche, look for a vehicle that has already been repaired.

 Alternatively, include the $3,000 cost of the IMS bearing repair in your budget. 

While some Porsche owners are willing to accept the risk, others believe that the issue is overblown.
