Exploring some of Europe’s most well-kept secrets often requires taking a slow-moving scenic bus ride through less-traveled valleys, epic hikes to almost-forgotten hamlets, or heart-thumping sailings to windswept, isolated isles.

That may be seen as inconvenient by some. I would call that a win.

As a result, I’ve made it a point to include a reasonable mix of secluded villages, under-the-radar sustainable city breaks, uninhabited islands, and lofty peaks that see fewer tourists than others.
