Is it worth selling car privately ?

It’s  not uncommon, that the dealers price is mostly  less than what you get if you sold you car privately.

But, Selling privately has some advantages and disadvantages.

In This article we will discus them all  and also few Nifty tips to sell your car privately.

Advantages of selling car privately

Which option is preferable when it comes time to sell your vehicle? Selling it privately or trading it in/selling it to a dealer?

There is one significant advantage to selling your car privately:

An additional $2K to $4K in your pocket – even if the vehicle is not very valuable. Or if you are selling quite a new car( 2-3 yo car) you can make up to  $10K profit.

By selling it yourself, you’ll be able to get retail price (or slightly below) whereas if you sell it to a dealer, you’ll only get wholesale value.

The price difference is usually 10 – 20%.

Disadvantages of selling car privately

While it may appear to be a no-brainer to sell your car privately, there are a slew of disadvantages to consider.

To begin, you’ll need to invest significantly more time selling the car yourself.

You’ll need to create a classified advertisement, distribute it to several different websites, respond to emails and phone calls, and – worst of all – schedule appointments for prospects to inspect the vehicle.

Frequently, individuals cancel or fail to appear.

Although it may take several weeks to sell the vehicle, you may get lucky and find a buyer immediately – especially if you price the vehicle competitively in comparison to other vehicles on the market.

Another disadvantage is the inconvenience of dealing with payments and car Rego paperwork, as well as the risk of fraud during the transaction.

Most dangerous one can be allowing outright strangers to visit your home .

This may prove fatal and may get in to victim of robbery or something more dangerous.

Many sellers, particularly women, are fearful of strangers coming to test drive their vehicle.

Although crime is extremely low and there are steps you can take to reduce it, there is always a chance that something bad will happen, and some people are uncomfortable with that.

In the majority of states, selling your vehicle privately precludes you from receiving a trade-in tax credit.

This is only a disadvantage if you are simultaneously shopping for a replacement vehicle.

The trade-in tax credit is only applicable if you purchase and sell a vehicle at a dealership in one transaction.

The tax credit can be worth up to $1,000 on a $10,000 trade-in, depending on your local tax rates.

Finally, if you sell a car that immediately breaks down, you may be in for some serious headaches.

Although they may not have a strong case, many purchasers pursue legal action.

Finally, you must weigh these advantages and disadvantages and decide whether an additional $10K to $12K is worth the effort.

If saving money is your primary objective, we believe it is well worth selling the car yourself; however, if convenience and safety are your primary concerns, selling to a dealer is probably your best option.

Tips before selling your car Privately in Australia.

If you’re considering selling your car, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is how you’ll sell it.

we  have already discussed how selling privately on your own often results in a higher price than trading it in or selling to a dealership.

You may get more for your old car if you sell it privately rather than trade it in. However, finding a buyer can take time, effort and advertising expense.

So, the higher price you may receive does not reflect the amount of time, effort, money, and stress involved in the process.

How to Close a Private Car Sale

Do the Paperwork Correctly and Avoid Problems Later.

Whether you’re buying or selling a used car, you must ensure that all necessary paperwork is filed and the transaction is properly closed.

While the laws governing the sale of motor vehicles vary by state and also country by country, the general structure of the transaction is consistent.

Consult your state’s /Country’s Department of Motor Vehicles for specific steps.

As a private seller, it is your responsibility to ensure that you receive proper payment for your vehicle and to limit your liability (in case the new owner crashes the car right after driving away in it).

When You Sell Your Automobile privately Obtaining payment for the sale is primary:

Cash is the simplest method of collecting payment for your vehicle. The purchaser may request a receipt for the cash payment.

A bill of sale serves as a receipt if you provide one.

Additionally, if you or the buyer prefer to pay with a cashier’s check, follow these safety precautions and arrange to meet at the buyer’s bank.

When selling a vehicle remotely, an escrow service can be used to facilitate the transaction.

Escrow essentially verifies that the buyer has paid the seller and transfers the funds from the buyer to the seller.

Accepting a buyer’s promise of future payment is risky, even if the buyer is a friend. If the vehicle is totalled, the new owner’s motivation to repay you is significantly reduced.

You are perfectly within your rights to refuse to float loan payments, and the buyer will typically understand and quietly withdraw their offer.

Why you should Sell your car Privately

If you want to get the highest possible price for your used vehicle, you should sell it privately.

Given that not everyone has the time or inclination to do so, selling it to a dealer is acceptable as long as you adhere to our guidelines.

However, there are three instances in which you should attempt to sell the vehicle on your own.

(1) If your vehicle has exceeded 100,000 miles or (

2) has been involved in a serious accident Or

(3) Your car is quite new but the dealer is offering way less than it Deserves

Over 100,000-mile vehicles are less desirable to dealers.

The majority of franchised dealers will not even sell the vehicles directly to consumers, preferring to wholesale them to other independent dealers or sell them at auction.

So, you’re unlikely to receive a fair price for your vehicle, so you’re much better off selling it directly to the end consumer.

The other circumstance in which you may wish to sell it yourself is if the vehicle has been involved in a serious accident.

We’re not talking about a minor dent or fender bender here, but rather a repair that costs at least $2,500.

The majority of dealers will deduct half the cost of repairs from the value of your vehicle automatically.

Therefore, if your car costs $10,000 to repair, they will deduct $5000 from its value, even if the car is in perfect condition.

Self-sale or Private sale  of the vehicle will mitigate this diminished value.

You will not receive the same amount as if the car had never been in an accident, but you will be significantly better off.

Why is it better to sell your car privately?

If you have time to locate the proper buyer, it is frequently better to sell your automobile privately than to replace it.

Often, through private sales, you may obtain a considerably greater price for your old automobile than through the dealer.

The main benefit of privately selling your automobile is that you can maximise its selling price.

Since the dealer has no profit margin – which reduces the part exchange value – you are going to be getting all the money from your automobile sales.

A second benefit of privately selling your automobile is that it allows you to take advantage of aspects a dealer doesn’t care about.

If your automobile has changes or distinctive features, it might make a private buyer more attractive than a vehicle dealer.

When we sold our Mini convertible, its features was the main attraction for the buyer.

Our Mini Convertible came with Leather Seats and some other fresh features like Unusual colour and so on.

Finally, a private sale is usually always the method for you to do when you sell a rare or antique automobile.

Precious automobiles – like antique sports cars – never catch attractive prices in part exchange, except when they are sold for that sort of vehicle to a specialist dealer.
