These are more at least slightly more expensive than their competitors. They build SUV’s as well, the Macan and the Cayenne. 

They build sports cars, the Boxster and the Cayman. They are most well known for the GT car – the 911. This is a cramped, 2+2 with a engine in the rear giving compromised handling.

The Panamera starts at $88,000 for a 2.9L V6. The 7 series is slightly cheaper at $86,000 for a 3L inline 6. Both have similar power.

I say this as a Porsche owner, so take it with a grain of salt, but I prefer Porsche over BMW.

It’s hard to compare brands, But easier to compares cars

Porsche and BMW automobiles today are not very comparable. But things were different twenty years ago. The brands most likely competed directly with one another.

The most straightforward comparison is between a M3 E46 and a basic model 911 or 996. 

They have extremely comparable HP, flat 6 engines, high rpm, and are both great automobiles. One has the engine at the front, while the other has it in the back.

However, other from those two unique models, there aren’t many truly equivalent automobiles, especially in the future. Both are wonderful names, but Porsche has stepped up a notch at the moment. 

That has nothing to do with BMW, but rather with Porsche’s progress.

From personal experience, I have a 10+ year old 5-series BMW that has run flawlessly. But I had bought a newer X5 which was a total lemon (for the year that I had, not representative of the line in general).

BMW is known for their awesome inline-6 engines – front engine configuration.

They are also known for making V12’s, like the S70 in the McLaren F1. Typically their cars will have a 50/50 weight distribution.

They are famous for making Motorsport (///M) ready versions of their cars while maintaining good daily driver characteristics. BMW is also known for making good motorcycles.

Both are big in racing, with Porsche being superior in several regards. BMW mostly focuses on sporty sedans and coupes. Whereas Porsche focuses more on the high end, and has also made a hybrid hyper-car – the 918. Both make good SUV’s.

Porsche Vs. BMW Better at what?

When you are comparing Porsche vs BMW , you are  comparing apples to pears.Well, You can’t compare a 911 to an M4, or a 718 to an M2.

Let’s say you compare Cayenne to X5, a base Cayenne “starts” at around 65k while a base BMW X5 “starts” at around 50k.

There’s a 15k difference to begin with in 2 cars which are in the same category but different luxury range.

If you want to cross shop Porsche SUVs you should compare them to Range Rover SUVs.

Porsche sports cars are pretty much in a class of their own but will never provide the practicality and daily driver capability of an M model, so you their not competing against each other either.

If you want to compare a  Porsche 911 you’d have to go in the ranges of Aston Martin, AMG GT S, Audi R8, Ferrari 458, for example. Point is, as per sports cars, Porsche isn’t either a hyper exotic car but neither is it a “mainstream” luxe brand like Audi, BMW or Mercedes.
