If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, determining which make and model is best for you can be challenging.

One term you may come across frequently during your search is ‘luxury,’ but what does that actually mean for a vehicle?

Contrary to popular belief, luxury vehicles can be manufactured by any manufacturer.

To qualify as a luxury vehicle, the vehicle must have high-end features that go above and beyond the bare minimum.

The term “luxury” refers to vehicles that offer enhanced performance capabilities, luxurious interiors, and the latest in safety and technology features. Historically, brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi were referred to as luxury vehicles.

However, mainstream brands such as Ford, Toyota and Honda now offer luxury models.

Is Audi more luxurious than BMW?

Audi is the main competitor of BMW, and there is absolutely no difference between both of them in terms of luxury.

To me it seems that more or less every Audi model has a BMW competitor and the other way round.

There may be a slight difference at the top end: BMW owns Rolls Royce, while the VW Group owns both Audi and Bentley.

If I compare Rolls Royce to Bentley, Rolls Royce clearly is the more luxurious and more expensive brand.

For me this means that BMW can put more luxury in their 7-series without cannibalizing their Rolls Royce sales, while Audi cannot make the A8 a real Bentley competitor.

So the latest 7-series may be a little bit more luxurious than an A8.

What defines a luxury car?

The term “luxury” is used to refer to an item that possesses features that go above and beyond the bare necessities.

A $15,000 Swiss watch performs the same function as a $50 Casio, but this does not appear to deter sales, as it possesses a high level of quality and a set of brand values that are highly appealing. Apart from the Mitsubishi Mirage and its sub-$15,000 competitors, no car on the market today lacks some level of luxury creature comforts.

However, the Australian government defines a luxury car solely by its price. As a result, a Mercedes-Benz C200 qualifies for the Luxury Car Tax (LCT), whereas a Toyota LandCruiser Prado does not.

How that makes sense is a discussion for another day; what is clear is that the concept of a luxury car remains completely undefined and appears to be entirely subjective rather than objective.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A LUXURY VEHICLE? DEFINING EXPENSIVE CARS

Simply said, a luxury item is anything that goes above and beyond the necessities.

A cheap carry-on roller-bag from the discount shop will typically work to transport your clothing, but a beautiful suitcase from Louis Vuitton will likely endure longer, all while broadcasting that you have the resources to purchase a more costly luggage.

What exactly is ‘luxury’ and what defines a luxury automobile? These are some of the most perplexing questions in the automotive industry. Is it solely a matter of brand? What about the technology? Features? Price? Heritage?

It’s nearly impossible to define the point at which a mainstream vehicle becomes a luxury vehicle, or vice versa.

Is a sub-$40,000 Audi A1 considered a luxury vehicle? How about an A180 Mercedes-Benz? Both are entry-level vehicles that are significantly less expensive than a top-of-the-line Holden Commodore.

Yet the Commodore is about as mainstream as they come, and the Germans exude an aura of prestige that is difficult to quantify, garnering far more perceived value than the homegrown Holden, even in base trim.

What constitutes a premium vehicle? It all depends. Essentially, the term “luxury” refers to going above and beyond fundamental requirements.

However, everyone’s definition of luxury is different. In this section, we will discuss some of the characteristics that make automobiles appear luxury to most buyers.

Features that are above average

Simply said, luxury automobiles have more opulent amenities than standard vehicles.

Manufacturers will frequently prioritise technology when designing these vehicles, including rearview cameras, power sliding doors, GPS systems, autonomous safety measures, and other game-changing components.

Beautiful Interiors

While all automobiles are designed to provide comfort, luxury vehicles genuinely pamper their occupants. Interior features like as heated leather seats and steering wheels, considerable leg room, cutting-edge entertainment systems, and wood trim are common in high-end automobiles.

Expensive Dealerships

Of course, the extravagance isn’t confined to the automobile itself—a luxury vehicle’s reputation is influenced in part by the dealership that sells it. Many businesses will promote a pleasant client experience in their facilities by providing comfortable waiting spaces, complementary services, stunningly attractive showrooms, and other amenities.

As you can see, there is no common definition for a luxury car, which may now be produced by any business.

For a long time, companies like BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz were industry leaders in the luxury automobile market.

Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Most of us are familiar with the labels Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. Car purchasers in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia hold all three in high esteem, and it’s easy to understand why; they all have an affluent image, but there’s also a degree of design, engineering, and quality that constantly makes owning a car manufactured by any of these three brands a pleasure.

While the design of their vehicles is frequently traditional, they are often more elegant and intimidating than competitors. They also have cabins that are extremely luxurious, visually appealing, and often outfitted with cutting-edge technology.

As a consequence, automobiles from these manufacturers are just as popular on the secondhand market as they are new, implying that they retain their worth despite relatively high costs.

Ignoring supercar and ultra-luxury manufacturers for the time being, the three German luxury car brands with the most recognition in Australia are Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

The three Germans have earned their reputations for a variety of reasons, the most important of which – at least to Australians – appears to be heritage, with each of them boasting at least a century of history (Audi in one form or another).

All three have also dug deep over the last decade and developed cars that are significantly more affordable and accessible.

By fusing luxury values and a certain level of exclusivity with mass-produced automobiles, a paradox is created. Simultaneously, mainstream brands have encroached on the territory of such high-end brands by developing premium-luxury automobiles.

However, what constitutes luxury, or at the very least what constitutes luxury that also sells in reasonable volumes, varies enormously by country, reinforcing the notion that luxury cars are largely about perception.

Globally, BMW outsold Mercedes-Benz last year, which had only recently passed Audi for the first time since 2010 – a reversal of the order in Australia (where Mercedes-Benz leads BMW and Audi).

Should You Buy AUDI?

Audi began in 1932 as Auto Union, a merger of four distinct manufacturers. In reality, each of the four rings on the Audi emblem represents one of the four founding automobile firms that formed Auto Union.

Volkswagen purchased the brand in the 1960s and has owned the manufacturer ever since. Although Audi cars are manufactured in nine various locations across the world, the company’s roots are in Ingolstadt, Germany.

Audi manufactures a wide range of premium vehicles, ranging from saloons, coupes, and hatchback models (e.g. A1, A3, A4, and A5) to estates (known as ‘Avant’) and SUVs (prefixed with the letter ‘Q’).

Audi is known for developing vehicles with a modern and sleek appearance, a smooth and quiet driving experience, and four-wheel drive technology.

SLEEK & CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

Cars with the four ring emblem are known for their conservative styling, particularly on the outside. While this is a huge selling feature for some, others find it impossible to distinguish between Audi models.

Inside, Audi is widely regarded as having some of the nicest interiors on the market, with a variety of soft-touch plastics complimenting the simple and uncomplicated design.

Audi vehicles are generally more technologically sophisticated. One example is the ‘virtual cockpit,’ which allows the driver to customise the dashboard dials.

EXPERIENCE SMOOTH & QUIET DRIVING

Premium vehicles are intended to give a luxury driving experience, which includes being blissfully ignorant of engine and road noise as you drive down the road.

Audi vehicles are offered with a variety of strong and economical engines that provide a smooth and refined driving experience. If you like a more thrilling and engaging driving experience, a BMW may be a better fit.

TECHNOLOGY OF FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE

Except for the A1 supermini, nearly every Audi model comes standard with four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is standard on all vehicles bearing the ‘quattro’ badge.

Quattro is standard on a variety of model and engine combinations, although it may be added for about $2,500. Some owners believe that four-wheel drive technology improves the driving experience by providing more cornering capabilities.

The quattro system is highly complex on A4 vehicles and higher. It is always engaged to keep the wheels from spinning and to offer the best possible driving performance.

What is the point of buying a luxury car like the Audi A4 versus a higher trim of the Honda Accord?

As car buying choice is a very personal matter to you, if this brand exclusivity and prestige are important, those cars with their higher prices and higher maintenance costs are definitely worth the price.

Do not expect or get them for the reasons of reliability or durability, as many other answers have explained.

Typically for a European Luxury brand cars, after warranty period, two grands (US$) per year is typically average maintenance cost when maintained by at a non-dealer-mechanic (could be higher/lower in certain years and based on the model etc). At dealership they are typically double.

Just to add some more context – later on we’ve also had a Lexus which is a Luxury brand that also has very high reliability and durability.

It still does not have the brand-panache of European luxury (at least in the US market) though. And some other Japanese Luxury brands from Honda and Nissan – Acura and Infinity respectively – have even less of a “luxury prestige panache” around them.

For those who know about cars, it is fairly simple to gauge the “priorities” of the buyer’s car-choice based on which luxury brand they choose.

Are BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi considered luxury cars in Germany?

It could be Yes and no. They’re very common in Germany, so it takes more than just the logos to impress Germans.

Of course, we Germans the sports cars (Audi R8 or Mercedes SL, and maybe even the bigger BMWs) and the tuned versions, like AMG (Mercedes) or M (BMW), but only if they’re new.

There are too many older models driving around for them to generally be considered luxury cars over here. While a Porsche, of course, is (almost) always considered a luxury car, no matter the age or model, even though they’re very common here, too.

And Germans certainly love other European luxury cars like Jags, Astons, Ferraris, Lotus’, Maseratis or Lamborghinis, and Germans absolutely adore vintage cars, no matter if they’re “just” VW Beetles or Mercedes SLs.
