The Mini is a popular car brand that is as British as they come.

In 1999, the original Mini was voted the second most popular car of the twentieth century, and it was a staple of British culture in the 1960s.

Mini, which is now owned by BMW, remains a prominent brand in the United Kingdom, USA and Australia.

However, how dependable are Minis? BMW isn’t known for its dependability, so is Mini any different?

In this post, we examine Mini’s reliability and how it compares to that of some of their competitors.

How reliable are Minis?

Mini is, to be honest, above average in terms of dependability.

They are neither untrustworthy nor the most trustworthy producer on the market. They’re just normal.

With a reliability index of 110, ReliabilityIndex ranks the brand 19th out of 36.

This isn’t bad, but it’s more average than above average.

With 140 problems per 100 cars, the Telegraph ranks Mini as the 19th most reliable car brand.

They’ve dropped a lot since last year, when they were ranked 13th with just 105 problems per 100 vehicles.

CNN also rated Mini as average, ranking them tenth in their top ten for dependability, barely making the cut.

How reliable is the Mini Cooper?

The Mini Cooper is the most well-known Mini and is what most people think of when they hear the word “Mini.”

In terms of dependability, the Mini Cooper is average. It has a reliability index of 117, which is higher than the average of 118.

Its repair costs aren’t too bad, coming in at $600 on average, which is quite good when compared to some of their competitors.

They are, however, off the road for a little longer, at 2.62 hours.

The engine appears to be the source of the majority of the problems, accounting for 29.48 per cent of all issues.

Is the Mini One reliable?

With a reliability index of 113, the Mini One outperforms Cooper in terms of dependability.

It has an average repair cost of $840 and is out of commission for 3.08 hours, which is quite a long time.Repair costs are also higher than those of Cooper and some of their competitors.

Again, the engine appears to be the primary source of problems, accounting for 32.29 per cent of all issues.

The majority of consumer feedback on automobiles is positive. Many users give the Mini One 4 or 5 stars for dependability.

There are some complaints, but they are few in comparison to those who are singing their praises.

One customer mentions that there were some issues for which Mini couldn’t find a solution, so customer service may come into play here as well.

How do you determine reliability of a Car?

So, how do we determine how dependable a car is?

The most obvious way is to consider how many things go wrong with the vehicle; this is a surefire way to determine its dependability. This is where numerical data is extremely useful.

ReliabilityIndex, for example, uses data from WarrantyDirect, which offers extended warranties for a variety of makes and models.

When someone files a claim, the information is recorded and used to determine which vehicles are reliable and which are not.

They also consider the amount of time the car is off the road and the average cost of repairs. Both of these factors contribute to dependability overall.

New parts will not be prohibitively expensive or difficult to obtain, but they may be scarce or slightly more expensive than parts for a less expensive vehicle.

This can have an impact on dependability. We also use consumer surveys and self-reports to determine a car’s dependability.

This is because we can learn more about the people who drive the car on a daily basis.

We can also learn more about individual experiences that support or contradict what the numerical data is telling us.

For example, we can tell that one driver is dissatisfied with the repair costs, while another is dissatisfied with the customer service.

This may lower their dependability rating.

Both are excellent methods for determining a vehicle’s dependability.

What generation of Mini Cooper is the most reliable?

If you are actually interested in the 2nd gen MINIs (made from 2007–2013) then I do have a few tips for you:

Avoid the 2007–2010 model year S’s. There are a couple of major design flaws with the turbocharged N14 engine that were updated in the 2011+ model that uses a new N18 engine (in the S).

So far, many of the major issues are far less likely to happen in the N18.

That being said I did own a 2008 S and sold it recently with 78,000 miles on it without any major catastrophic engine issues, so you may get lucky but why take a chance?

As with any used car the fewer miles the better, and MINI offers a lot of premium options such as auto-dim rear and side-view mirrors, park sensors, navigation, keyless entry/start that I’d find one with as many options as possible

Obviously, the manual transmission is required 🙂

Have a pre-purchase inspection done by a MINI dealer that has worked on them before, they’ll know what to look for.

MINI’s are the most fun to drive a car that I’ve ever owned, and for the foreseeable future, I don’t plan on owning another model unless my life dictates otherwise.

The pops and burbles in sport mode make me giggle like a little kid, and the great handling makes even mundane commutes just a little more enjoyable.

The S’s have enough power but if you want the top of the line go JCW. I had the S and when I was looking for another MINI I decided on a JCW because I would always regret not going up to that next level.

They do command a slight premium in the used market and I will note that only the 2013 JCW has the updated N18 engine, 2012 and previous JCW models use the N14 even though it was discontinued for the S in 2011.

What is more reliable, the Mini Cooper 2016 or the newer Mini Cooper?

As a matter of fact, Minis are in general quite reliable but maintenance is very expensive.

It’s always better to Purchase New car(If your Budget allows)  because for the simple reason it wasn’t being used.

Now, new is always best. But it is also a question of luck when acquiring one.

The same goes for the used cars – they are used, we know, but if they are well maintained and the production was good – you’ll be happy with the older one.

Now, if you talk about technology, Companies tend to do small changes with every new generation – either interior features like dashboard buttons, infotainment, lights.

How reliable are 2013 mini coopers?

A 2013 Cooper is the last model year of the 2nd generation MINI.

It will be the most reliable of that generation as there were many improvements made over the life cycle, the biggest improvements coming with the life cycle impulse (minor change) in 2011.

2011–2013 cars got a better cabin fit and finish but more importantly upgraded N16 and N18 engines (and for the automatics, a new automatic transmission as well).

Many of the problems with the earlier N12 and N14 engines were addressed, including early timing chain failure, clutch, thermostat housing, variable valve timing and other issues.

If you compare to the 1st generation MINI from 2002–2006, those were more mechanically reliable (few fleet-wide problems other than pesky oil leaks and a bad electric power steering pump design) – but they are older and have lots of miles on them these days so it’s getting harder to find a well-maintained example.

The 2005 and 2006 were the most reliable of this generation.

The third-generation MINI was launched in 2014

So far, reliability has been generally very good even, although there have been some problems with the automatic transmissions – many of which are being corrected through software updates.

For the third generation, probably you’re looking at better reliability if you choose a 2017 or 2018 even 2019 0r 2020.

The most Common Mini problems

When shopping for a new car, you’ll want to know what kind of issues you might run into down the road.

Here are some common issues to look out for when shopping for a Mini:

The engine

While Mini engines are generally reliable, they can encounter some issues. These include the timing chain, which needs to be tensioned, and hydraulic tappets that need to be replaced.

The  gearbox

If you hear a whine coming from the transmission, it could be due to a lack of oil or a leak. This can happen in any car, but it is most common in Minis.

Leakage

If you’re looking for a used model, this is something to keep an eye out for. Older Minis were prone to water leaks.
