Convertibles aren’t the most practical vehicles for everyday use + may not be suitable for Rugged Road trips.

The majority of people use their automobiles as mode of transportation, and they are not concerned with horsepower, torque, handling convertibles, sports cars, or anything else. 

Furthermore, if you are not a convertible enthusiast, you are unlikely to even consider them, especially given the fact that they are more expensive.

Should I invest in a convertible vehicle? However, let’s look at the practicalities and bust a few myths in the process.

It’s either because they enjoy open-top motoring, or they want others to think they enjoy open-top motoring, or they’re buying a convertible because the car they really want is only offered as a convertible.

I’ve had 2 convertibles( Saab Convertible & Mini cooper ) and have loved every one of them. Keep in mind I live in Sydney, Australia, so it’s sunny pretty much year ‘round. I’ve not lived in say Buffalo N.Y., or Chicago where I know it gets bloody cold for months.

Consider that they let in more external noise, are easier to break into, the trunk space is compromised and if you’re driving through whiteout windy conditions it might make things more uncomfortable.

None of those considerations matters at all to me. I have insurance for theft, I’ve never had one leak, the heaters keep the inside warm here in Sydney anyway.

Some models even require you to pay a significant premium to upgrade to a convertible, to the point where you are effectively trading in a well-equipped coupe/sedan for a bare bones convertible with no additional equipment.

Alternatively, if you want to sell the car, the market for convertibles is marginal when compared to the market for sedans and coupes. 

If someone is interested in a coupe, it is likely that they will also consider a sedan, and vice versa. 

A person who is interested in a sedan or a coupe, on the other hand, is unlikely to be interested in a convertible.

Hardtop convertibles and soft-top convertibles are the two most common types of convertibles, with the former being the more popular.

And a vacation with half of the cargo space is a waste! Another benefit of convertibles is a shorter roof line when compared to sedans/coupes. This results in an increased amount of space for the back seats.

💡Buying a convertible car for road trips may not be the best idea if you take many longer and more rugged road trips in a  year. For these types of road trips, I would recommend a hardtop vehicle ( SUVs) that provides more comfort, versatility, and practicality. 

A hardtop car can handle rough terrain better, has more cargo space for all of your supplies, and provides a more quiet and comfortable ride on long road trips.

Furthermore, if you intend to drive in a variety of weather conditions, a convertible may not be the best option. Convertibles are best suited for warm and sunny weather and may not offer adequate protection against rain, wind, or cold temperatures.

Sheer pleasure of driving in a convertible

A convertible is either something you enjoy or something you don’t. My first encounter with one was a Mercedes that I hired at Sydney Airport and drove with my family to Sydney  during the course of a two-week holiday.
