The E-class is a mid-size luxury sedan that is a step up from the entry-level C-class.
The E-class is the most popular Mercedes sedan, and its competitors include the Audi A6 and the BMW 5-series.
Both of these models provide everything you’d expect from a Mercedes in 2021. In 2020, the E-class was refreshed, and the C-class received a complete redesign, particularly of the interior.

Differences in size and segment
The size distinction between these two models is obvious.
The C-class is also primarily designed as a sedan, with seating for up to five people, but it cannot compete with the E-class in terms of interior or exterior dimensions. The E-class has a wheelbase of 115.7 inches, while the C-class has a wheelbase of 111.8 inches.
Furthermore, the E-class measures 193.8 inches in length and the C-class measures 184.6 inches in length. The E-class is also slightly wider and taller.
Because of these exterior dimension differences, the E-class is a significantly larger car.
The interior dimensions are also quite different, with the E-class having more inches of headroom and legroom.
The E-class sedan also has a larger trunk (13.1 cubic feet) than the C-class sedan (12.6 cubic feet). The E-class has a larger feel, a larger appearance, and a larger driving experience.

Engines of the Mercedes C-Class vs. the Mercedes E-Class
The C-Class range begins with the 184hp C200 turbo petrol, which returns 50mpg and accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds. For those seeking increased performance, there is a C43 AMG 4Matic that accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds, has all-wheel drive, and still averages 37.2 miles per gallon.
The top-of-the-line AMG C63 produces up to 510hp and accelerates to 62mph in four seconds flat from rest.
However, diesel models are more popular, with the C200 Bluetec achieving an average of 72.4mpg. The C220 is slightly faster, while the C250 enhances performance without sacrificing its impressive fuel economy.
Buyers of hybrid vehicles can choose between the C300 Bluetec with 230hp and an EPA-estimated 78.5mpg or the plug-in C350e with 135mpg.
The E-Class is not equipped with a particularly diverse range of engines.
The E200d is the entry-level engine; it is a diesel with low operating costs thanks to its 72mpg fuel economy but still manages the 0-62mph sprint in 8.4 seconds.
The majority of buyers will opt for the more relaxed E220d, which produces 194hp and achieves the same fuel economy figures but accelerates to 62mph in 7.3 seconds.
The E350d produces 258 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds while returning a very respectable 54 miles per gallon.
Petrol engines are less popular but are available with 184hp or 245hp E200 or E300 trim levels, while performance enthusiasts can opt for the unhinged AMG E63 with up to 612hp and a 0-62 time of just 3.4 seconds.
Mercedes E-class vs Mercedes C-class: Which is better?
If you put these two legendary Mercedes sedans head-to-head, it would be difficult to determine which one would come out on top.
Normally, the E-class would be the clear winner, but the newly released 2022 Mercedes C-class outperforms the E-class in a variety of areas, including interior design and layout, engine efficiency, and overall performance. If you intend to chauffeur, the E-class is a superior automobile.
It is also slightly more comfortable, slightly larger, and slightly more powerful than the C-class. For its part, the C-class boasts an incredible high-tech interior, advanced LED headlights, advanced artificial intelligence functionality, and a more modern design than the S-class.
A 6-cylinder Mercedes C-class is currently unavailable, but the E450 is available as a 6-cylinder Mercedes E-class, according to the manufacturer’s website.
Choosing either of these two options ensures that you will have a complete Mercedes Benz experience.
However, if you are not in a hurry, you should hold off until Mercedes releases the new E-class in a few years, as the new E-class will undoubtedly be a significant step up in quality from the current C-class.
Interiors of the Mercedes C-Class and Mercedes E-Class
The cabin of the C-Class is one of the best in its class, boasting immaculate build quality, a plethora of luxurious materials, and a slew of technological features.
The dashboard itself is attractive and takes its design cues from the larger S-Class sedan.
Bluetooth and DAB digital radio are standard across the range, with sporty AMG Line models receiving some additional sporty touches to distinguish them from the rest of the lineup.
The E-Class raises the bar in terms of luxury by several notches. It appears to be a more accurate reproduction of the S-Class interior rather than a scaled-down version of it.
It has the appearance of being built to last a long time because of the high-quality materials and similarly durable construction.
If desired, the dials can be replaced by an optional second infotainment screen, giving the E-Class an advantage over the C-Class in terms of technological sophistication.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class vs. Mercedes-Benz E-Class practicality
The interior of the Mercedes C-Class is not only attractive, but also spacious. The front has plenty of head and legroom, while the back has a good amount of space, though the sloping roofline reduces headroom slightly.
There are a few useful cubby holes, and the 480-litre boot space is adequate for most buyers; however, the opening is slightly restricted by intrusive brake light frames.
Unfortunately, you must pay $1595 for 60:40 split-folding seats as part of the Executive package, which also includes sat nav and heated front seats.
The E-Class, unsurprisingly, has more space than the C-Class. There’s plenty of head and legroom up front, and even more space in the back.
The 540-litre boot of the E-Class is larger than that of some of its key competitors and has a wider opening than the C-Class, making loading easier.
Split-folding seats are a $545 option that is standard on many of Mercedes’ competitors.
Mercedes C-Class and Mercedes E-Class design comparison
The C-Class and E-Class are members of the same family and share many design cues, including the brand’s dominant grille, three-pointed badge, bold headlights, and sharp lines.
The sides of the C-Class, on the other hand, are a little more sculpted and feature a few more aggressive angles, giving it a slightly sportier overall appearance.
The E-Class has a more elegant, mature appearance, with less overt body styling than the S-Class.
As a result of its longer boot and cabin, the E-Class appears to be longer than the C-Class, which can be either a positive or a negative depending on your point of view.
Driving a Mercedes C-Class vs. a Mercedes E-Class
The C-Class is a joy to drive, thanks to its light, precise controls and a suspension that strikes an excellent balance of comfort and control.
While it lacks the nimble feel of the BMW 3 Series, it absorbs bumps well if you avoid larger alloy wheels and has a poised feel through the corners.
Air suspension adds some comfort but is really only worthwhile on more expensive models. The E-Class is extremely comfortable to drive – although it is at its best with the optional air suspension, which imparts a luxury car-like float.
The $1,700 Driver Pilot option enables autonomous driving at speeds up to 130mph, though you must keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times for it to work.
What are the most expensive E and C-class versions, according to the FAQ section?
The E63 AMG S model is the most expensive E-class variant, with a starting price of $107,500 USD. Powered by a 4.0-liter BiTurbo V8 engine with 600 horsepower and mated to a 9-speed AMG.
Speedshift transmission, the E63 is a high-performance sports car. The E63 manages a 0-to-60 time of less than three seconds, but it falls short in the area of fuel efficiency.
The C63 S AMG Coupe is the most expensive variant of the C-class, with a starting price of $129,900.
The C63 coupe is priced at $78k, and it comes equipped with a 4.0-litre V8 BiTurbo engine mated to an AMG Speedshift transmission with nine speeds.
The C63 has 503 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds, but it also has poor fuel efficiency ratings, as evidenced by its low fuel economy ratings.
Is the Mercedes-Benz C-class a better value when compared to the Audi A4 or the BMW 3-series?
The Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan starts at approximately $40k for the base model, while the Audi A4 starts at approximately $10k.
The BMW 3-series is the most expensive, with prices starting at $42k. It’s safe to say that all three of these products are competitively priced, and many dealers are eager to offer discounts, special prices, and package deals to their customers.
On a Tight Budget? The C-Class isn’t a Bad Option
There’s just no way the C-Class can stand up to the E-Class, but it’s a great option for buyers who just can’t pull off that $65K-plus MSRP.
It has all the luxury you need, great performance, and a legendary name behind it.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is one of the best-balanced luxury cars on the market with its delicate combination of luxury and performance.
Plus, it has options to fit any buyer’s needs and even has red-hot performance models ready to tackle a curvy country road.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class comparison and Verdict
The C-Class is the sportier of the two, so if maximum interior space isn’t a priority but you’re looking for something with a little more driver appeal, this is probably the car for you.
However, the E-Class is more refined and plush, and its more modern 2.0-litre diesel engine is smoother than the C-equivalent Class’s 2.1-litre unit.
If you can afford it, the E Class’s balanced driving experience with a greater emphasis on comfort and space may be more appealing, but the C-Class offers a nearly identical experience at a lower price.
